Man from Nowhere

Episode one
The approaching spring of 1945 was special. There was an aura of impending victory in the air. People are tired of war. Everyone wanted this nightmare to end. And the fact that war, whatever you call it, whatever colorful and motley wrapper you wrap it in, is the most shameful, barbaric and not pleasing to God, all sane people understood, understand and will understand. Everyone expected Hitler and his army to be defeated as quickly as possible. So that not only the fascists who killed and sowed death, but also the main criminal who pushed them to commit a crime were punished most severely. For to go to war on foreign territory, to disrupt the peaceful life of other nations, to bring death and destruction to their territory is the gravest of all possible sins!
Everyone wanted Hitler, the barbarian ruler, the murderous ruler, to be so severely punished that even after decades and centuries, other leaders of countries would be in horror, and would not even dare to do something similar in their thoughts! So that the thought of taking a sword and an ax to a foreign land could not even enter their heads!
Everyone expected that the war would soon end, that both the main criminal and his cannon fodder would be punished. Those who, intoxicated by the first easy victories of the beginning of the war, were applauded by the crazed German nation, intoxicated by Hitler’s propaganda. They saw the soldiers of the Great Reich as some kind of heroes, galloping across the countries of Europe on white horses, illuminating the dark and stupid inhabitants of the countries they occupied with their majestic bright set. Now, at the end of the war, the German nation belatedly realized that someone who entered the territory of a foreign country with a machine gun in his hands cannot a priori be called a Warrior of Light. To call occupiers, invaders, looters and murderers, which, without a doubt, any interventionist is, this is the height of cynicism and meanness! Then, at the beginning of 1945, the Germans realized this. They were firmly convinced that centuries and millennia would pass, but no one would ever again dare to repeat such a stupid, common sense-defying, fatal mistake of theirs!
It was then, during this epiphany, that the events of the story that is brought to your attention took place. It is so unusual and striking that it will surely attract your attention.
The dead night of February 11, 1945 gave the employees of Boston State Hospital no indication that it would be a special day for them. That something will happen that night that will give people a reason to remember this medical institution for years and even decades. After all, it was the events that took place here that gave rise to that string of mysteries and secrets that have not yet been fully revealed...
So, at half past three in the morning the silence in the courtyard of this hospital was broken by the sound of an ambulance engine. He delivered a seriously wounded man.
The nurse on duty came out to hear the noise and saw the driver dressed in military uniform.
- What's happened? “My sister had a lot of chances to see injuries on the bodies of boys and young men mutilated by the war, so every time she treated with sincere compassion every new person for whom fate had prepared a sad path to one of the beds of this hospital.
- Accept the wounded!
The military man's answer was short, laconic and matter-of-fact.
It was clear that the patient needed urgent medical attention.
The driver helped the nurse on duty take the patient to the operating room and place him on the examination table.
- You can call him Charles Jamison. – These words were heard by the sister, bending over the wounded man and examining him.
When she raised her head, the driver was no longer next to her.
He left so quickly that she even noticed his departure.
But now she clearly had no time for the ambulance driver. Even a cursory preliminary examination was enough to understand that the wounded man’s condition was very serious.
All this time Jamison lay unconscious. Several shrapnel wounds had already festered on his legs. The patient’s appearance was complemented by an ineptly stitched six-centimeter scar on his cheek. And the picturesque sea tattoos on his arms and torso looked absolutely exotic.
The sister, realizing the seriousness of the situation, immediately called a surgeon. And then she ran after the driver to ask where to report the further fate of the victim. But the ambulance seemed to melt into thin air! The nurse did not hear the noise of the engine; it seemed to her that he could not have left so quickly. But the fact remained: there was no ambulance anywhere...
Such an unusually quick departure of the car seemed to the woman like some kind of suspicious hasty escape... It confused the duty sister so much that she called the police.

Episode two
- Well, then, Lieutenant. Let us summarize what has already been done to shed light on this extremely confusing matter.
The owner of the office sighed heavily, continuing to sort through the pile of papers lying on the table in front of him.
- Yes, Mr. Major... The matter is truly mysterious, enigmatic, and I would say even mystical...
The man in military uniform sitting next to him shook his head sadly.
- I agree about the mysticism, Lieutenant. – The major smiled. - But let's get down to business. So... The police arrived in the morning. By that time, Jamison had already undergone surgery. But he was still in a coma. Detectives from the Boston Police Department carefully examined the patient's Navy uniform. The jacket and trousers turned out to be not American-made. In the pockets of the clothes, the police did not find a single document indicating the identity of the patient. The search for the ambulance that took the wounded man to the hospital was unsuccessful. As it turned out, neither the civilian nor the military services had cars of the brand named by the nurse.
- Yes, Mister Major. I personally dealt with this matter and was surprised that such a noticeable car could not be a needle in a haystack. If he really existed, we would certainly find him. One gets the impression that this ambulance, like Mr. Jamison himself, seemed to come out of nowhere...
“That’s for sure...” The owner of the office smiled bitterly. “That’s why the FBI was involved in the mysterious case.” Our agents attempted to identify the patient through the US Navy and Merchant Marines. And what's interesting! Even after receiving the patient’s fingerprints, naval services were unable to shed light on the mystery of this man’s real name!
“The absence of a person undoubtedly associated with the fleet being imprinted in the database of the US Navy and Merchant Marine looks very strange...” The lieutenant shook his head. “The only good thing is that after a month it became clear that the patient would live. Although his body was paralyzed from the back down, his wounds began to heal, and he came out of his coma. It is very important! We expected that now Jamison himself would help us establish his own identity! However, the patient continues to maintain a frightening silence... Personally, this worries me very much. I believe that not only I, but also many of our colleagues themselves, Mr. Major, have the right to suspect that this strange and mysterious man out of nowhere is deliberately hiding something from us. But doctors think differently. According to their assumptions, Mr. Jamison's memory loss is the result of severe psychological shock. Because of their position, and assumptions that sanity would not return to him, on July 15 of this year, 1945, the official investigation into the Jamison case was closed. This is what was written in the documents: due to the impossibility of establishing his true identity. The case really looks hopeless: the patient spent days, weeks and months on end in a wheelchair, silently contemplating the city landscapes...
- Your last phrase, lieutenant, is more suitable for some kind of sad and lyrical pulp novel. Where an ellipsis is placed, and everything is left to the reader’s conjecture... That’s why we started this conversation with you, lieutenant, because we both spent a lot of time on it, I would say, got carried away by it, and I suppose we would both like to hope that this mysterious and The amazing story will continue. Personally, that’s exactly what I think. I hope you do too.
- Of course, state duty major! – The interlocutor of the owner of the office smiled. “I have no doubt at all that in this whole story there may still be so much shocking and, as we have already said, mystical that, of course, I would like this whole epic to continue.”
The major and the lieutenant at that moment had no idea how prophetic their words would be...
Soon something really happened that no one hoped for and that no one expected...
Early one August morning, Charles Jamison's sister came into her room.
She slowly began to open the windows in order to ventilate the room.
It was at this time that the eternally silent patient looked at her and, with a distinct British accent, said quietly:
- I don’t know how this happened...

Episode three
Good morning, Mr. Jamison! – The voice of Doctor Oliver Williams, who entered the patient’s room, was very friendly. – Meet Mr. Alton Barker! He is the head of the British Information Service. He has brought drawings and photographs for you, which I daresay will certainly interest you. Please check them out! Do not hurry! Nobody limits you in time! You have the opportunity to look at everything as carefully as possible. And then share your impressions with us. I ask you to! Take from Mr. Barker what he brought.
A man in the uniform of a naval officer who came with the doctor immediately handed over a folder with drawings and photographs to the patient who had risen from his bed.
He immediately took the papers and began to examine them with genuine interest.
Both newcomers sat down on the edge of the empty bed and began to closely observe the patient. While trying not to miss the slightest detail of what his reaction would be.
While Jamison looked long and hard at what was being offered, both of them had plenty of time to watch him and reconsider what was happening.
Dr. Oliver Williams was especially interested in this question. He immediately showed great interest in the secret of the mute patient.
He was immediately informed that the always silent patient had suddenly spoken.
From then on, the doctor became a very frequent visitor to the unusual patient’s room. The wise doctor understood that sometimes a kind, kind word means almost more to a patient than medicine. He tried to have sincere conversations with the patient in order to gain his trust, get him talking, and provoke him to frankness.
And it gave results! Gradually, Williams managed to get Jamison to admit that he was a sailor.
To check his words, the doctor invited the head of the British Information Service, Alton Barker, to the hospital. He brought with him drawings of English naval uniforms and photographs of various British ships.
And now they both carefully watched as the former sailor looked through the illustrations. They immediately noticed that Jamison remained completely indifferent to materials related to modern times. But when he saw several drawings of naval uniforms from the First World War, he immediately perked up! From the lights of excitement that appeared in his eyes, and from the brightening of his face, it was clear that this topic was close and understandable to the patient.
But suddenly he raised his eyebrows.
- Allow me! - He exclaimed in surprise. - Why are the chevrons positioned incorrectly in four pictures?!
These words caused a strong reaction from the head of the British Information Service. She even stood up slightly and clapped his hands, as if at that moment he had learned something important, which interested him very much, and which he was really looking forward to.
Everything became clear a little later, when the doctor invited Barker to his office to discuss what he had seen and heard. He did not wait for questions, but immediately began to speak emotionally.
- Inviting me to this meeting, you repeated more than once, doctor, that you have doubts that he is posing as a sailor. So I'll tell you what! He really is! Now I am firmly convinced of this! The whole point is, doctor, that I specifically changed the location of the chevrons in the drawings in order to test Jamison’s competence! True, I could not possibly expect that the patient would pay attention specifically to the outdated uniform. But that's exactly what he did, Doctor! Only a person who is well versed in them could notice that the chevrons in the pictures are in the wrong position! And, as you can see, doctor, he really knows the chevrons!
The amazement and delight that reigned on the face and behavior of the representative of the fleet was transmitted to the owner of the office.
- Yes-ah... - He said thoughtfully. – All this is extremely surprising... We are talking about the First World War! And now the second one has already ended... How can all this be explained?! Unique! A completely unique and inexplicable case!!!

Episode four
It is not difficult to guess that after this the British side became seriously interested in the mysterious patient. English maritime experts became perhaps the most frequent guests in Jamison's room.
The British understood that they could expect a lot more from this man of mystery that would surprise them.
And so it turned out. He once admitted that he served on the battleship Bellerophon immediately after the ship left the slipway. This simply could not happen, since the battleship set off on its maiden voyage in 1907!!!
But that was just the beginning! The experts expected the main shocks ahead!
- Try to remember anything else, Mr. Jamison, biting the one you just told me about! – The patient’s interlocutor perked up, anticipating the next portion of sensation.
- I remember how our ship headed for the Jutland Peninsula. On May 31, 1916, a fierce naval battle took place there. Alas, in it the German ships under the command of Admiral Shire caused significant damage to the English squadron. It was very difficult for us then... Very...
The narrator fell silent for a long time. It is clear that unpleasant memories tormented his soul.
- Yes, I know about this famous battle. – Wanting to maintain the conversation and provoke the patient to new revelations, the marine expert shook his head sympathetically. – The British suffered heavy losses then... Could you tell us anything more about this?
- No! No - Jamison shook his head categorically and flatly refused to talk about British losses. - If any of our ships sank, I didn’t see it!
After these words, the patient suddenly became withdrawn and refused to answer further questions.
It was incredible, but he behaved as if he considered himself a prisoner of war, obliged to keep secret information of national importance.
This is precisely the thought that occurred to the British expert who was now observing the strange behavior of the mysterious patient. This only increased and fueled interest in the person out of nowhere...

Episode five
It is not difficult to guess that the bewilderment of doctors and English officials grew every day. New facts that emerged in the patient’s memory shocked them more and more.
Navarnoe, the most amazing episode in this whole story is the epic associated with the legendary sailing ship "Cutty Sark". Most people in the world are probably familiar with the name of this ship, the symbol of the era!
That is why experts were struck by Jamison’s words when he recalled sailing on the three-masted clipper ship Cutty Sark. The mention of this legendary ship shocked the British, and they requested detailed information from London. As the documents stated, the high-speed clipper Cutty Sark, launched in 1869, sailed to China and Australia, and since 1922 it was used as a training ship. Since 1940, the clipper was docked, where it safely survived all the bombings of World War II.
But here's what's interesting! Filed with the documents for the Cutty Sark that arrived from London was a sheet of logbook from the German submarine U-2, marked with a red question mark. According to German records, on July 10, 1941, on the open sea, they met the three-masted sailing ship Cutty Sark. When ordered to drift, the sailboat responded with gunfire. The submariners did not tolerate such impudence on the part of the enemy, so the ship was immediately sunk by a torpedo salvo from a boat. Among the wreckage of the ship, the Germans found the only survivor! A sailor named Charles Jamison!!!
Doesn't this surprise you?! Yes, that’s what was written in the note, in black and white! Charles Jamison!!!
Not only this is amazing! According to the logic of events, Jamison should have ended up in German captivity. But another incredible incident happened! Jamison simply disappeared from the submarine! Literally, the Germans said: “Running”! But we all know very well the Ionic proverb about where exactly you can escape from a submarine...
The continuation of this whole story followed the publication of several newspaper articles dedicated to the mysterious patient of the Boston Hospital.
One day an American naval officer called the British consulate.
- I remembered that I had already met the name “Jemison”. - A confident male voice was heard on the phone. – I suggest you check the ship's documents of the warship Lejon from 1945.
British officials were keenly interested in everything connected with their mysterious fellow countryman. They, of course, took the information they received very seriously. As it turned out from the ship's documentation, on January 24, 1945, a man overboard was noticed on the open sea from the Lezhon. When he was taken onto the ship, he whispered "Charles Jamison" and immediately lost consciousness.
This fact added even more mystery to the already mysterious story associated with this amazing person. Indeed, how can one not be amazed at how Jamison ended up at sea when there was no ship or shipwreck nearby?! Why didn't he die in the icy water from hypothermia?! And most importantly: where did he spend three and a half years from the sinking of the Cutty Sark clipper to the miraculous rescue by the Lejeune crew?!

Episode six
The patient, Charles Jamison, remained in a Boston hospital until the time of his death. It followed on January 19, 1975.
In the last years of his life, the patient’s condition worsened, and he almost did not speak.
Detectives, naval historians and British consulate workers tried to study its history. They tried to figure out what the man was telling them from out of nowhere, and could not find answers to the questions... No matter how hard they tried...
Many have tried to understand this very real phenomenon, the mystery of the century. But in the way of all their reasoning and conclusions there was one thing: a dead end!
The opinions of all these people agreed on one thing: from the point of view of normal logic, the Jamison case is completely impossible to explain...
