I
Удав заглатывает свою жертву целиком, не жуя. - Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it.
Удав, который заглотил слона. - A boa constrictor digesting an elephant.
Я нарисовал удава изнутри, чтобы взрослым было понятно. - I drew the inside of a boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly.
Взрослые никогда ничего не понимают сами, а для детей очень утомительно без конца им всё объяснять и растолковывать. - Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tire some for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
Я умею с первого взгляда отличить Китай от Аризоны. - At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona.
Я долго жил среди взрослых. И я уже не говорил с ними ни об удавах, ни о джунглях, ни о звёздах. - I have lived a great deal among grown-ups. And I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars.

Пожалуйста, нарисуй мне барашка! - If you please - draw me a sheep!
На волосок от смерти... - In danger of death...
Лист бумаги и вечное перо. - A sheet of paper and a fountain-pen.
Мне не надо слона в удаве! - I do not want an elephant inside a boa constrictor.
Удав слишком опасный, а слон слишком большой. - A boa constrictor is a very dangerous creature, and an elephant is very cumbersome.
Мне нужен такой барашек, чтобы жил долго. - I want a sheep that will live a long time.

Ты упал с неба? - You dropped down from the sky?
Если идти всё прямо да прямо, далеко не уйдёшь... - Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far...

Никто ему не поверил, а всё потому, что он был одет по-турецки. - He was in Turkish costume, and so nobody would believe what he said.
Когда он был одет по последней моде, все с ним согласились. - He dressed with impressive style and elegance. And this time everybody accepted his report.
Не у всякого есть друг. - Not every one has a friend.
Я, к сожалению, не умею видеть барашка сквозь стенки ящика. - I, alas, do not know how to see sheep through the walls of boxes.

Баобабы сперва, пока не вырастут, бывают совсем маленькие. - Before they grow so big, the baobabs start out by being little.
Если это редис или розовый куст, пусть себе растёт на здоровье. Но если это какая-нибудь дурная трава, надо вырвать её с корнем, как только её узнаешь. - If it is only a sprout of radish or the sprig of a rose-bush, one would let it grow wherever it might wish. But when it is a bad plant, one must destroy it as soon as possible, the very first instant that one recognizes it.
Если баобаб не распознаешь вовремя, потом от него уже не избавишься. Он завладеет всей планетой и пронижет её насквозь своими корнями. - A baobab is something you will never, never be able to get rid of if you attend to it too late. It spreads over the entire planet. It bores clear through it with its roots.
Есть такое твёрдое правило: встал поутру, умылся, привёл себя в порядок - и сразу же приведи в порядок свою планету. - It is a question of discipline. When you've finished your own toilet in the morning, then it is time to attend to the toilet of your planet, just so, with the greatest care.
Непременно каждый день надо выпалывать баобабы, как только их уже можно отличить от розовых кустов. - You must see to it that you pull up regularly all the baobabs, at the very first moment when they can be distinguished from the rosebushes.
Если дашь волю баобабам, беды не миновать. - When it is a matter of baobabs, that always means a catastrophe.
Дети! Берегитесь баобабов! - Children, watch out for the baobabs!
Я старался, но у меня ничего не вышло. - I have tried. But with the others I have not been successful.

Когда в Америке полдень, во Франции солнце уже заходит. - When it is noon in the United States the sun is setting over France.
Когда очень грустно, хорошо поглядеть, как заходит солнце. - When one is so sad, one loves the sunset.

Шипы ни за чем не нужны, цветы выпускают их просто из злости. - The thorns are of no use at all. Flowers have thorns just for spite!
Они думают: если у них есть шипы, их все боятся. - They believe that their thorns are terrible weapons.
Ты видишь, я занят серьёзным делом! - Don't you see - I am very busy with matters of consequence!
Я - человек серьёзный! - I am busy with matters of consequence!
Я знаю одну планету, там живёт такой господин с багровым лицом. Он за всю свою жизнь ни разу не понюхал цветка. Ни разу не поглядел на звезду. Он никогда никого не любил. И никогда ничего не делал. Он занят только одним: складывает цифры. - I know a planet where there is a certain red-faced gentleman. He has never smelled a flower. He has never looked at a star. He has never loved any one. He has never done anything in his life but add up figures.
Неужели это не серьёзное дело - понять, почему цветы изо всех сил стараются отрастить шипы, если от шипов нет никакого толку? - Is it not a matter of consequence to try to understand why the flowers go to so much trouble to grow thorns which are never of any use to them?
Неужели это не важно, что барашки и цветы воюют друг с другом? - Is the warfare between the sheep and the flowers not important?
Если любишь цветок - единственный, какого больше нет ни на одной из многих миллионов звёзд, - этого довольно: смотришь на небо - и ты счастлив. - If some one loves a flower, of which just one single blossom grows in all the millions and millions of stars, it is enough to make him happy just to look at the stars.
Если барашек съест ваш цветок, это всё равно как если бы все звёзды разом погасли! - But if the sheep eats the flower, in one moment all his stars will be darkened...
Я нарисую твоему барашку намордник. Я нарисую для твоего цветка броню. - I will draw you a muzzle for your sheep. I will draw you a railing to put around your flower.
Как позвать, чтобы он услышал, как догнать его душу, ускользающую от меня. - I did not know how I could reach him, where I could overtake him and go on hand in hand with him once more.
Ведь она такая таинственная и неизведанная, эта страна слёз... - It is such a secret place, the land of tears.

На планете Маленького принца всегда росли простые,
скромные цветы - у них было мало лепестков, они занимали совсем мало места и никого не беспокоили. Они раскрывались поутру в траве и под вечер увядали. - On the little prince's planet the flowers had always been very simple. They had only one ring of petals; they took up no room at all; they were a trouble to nobody. One morning they would appear in the grass, and by night they would have faded peacefully away.
Вдруг это какая-нибудь новая разновидность баобаба? - It might, you see, have been a new kind of baobab.
Она не желала явиться на свет встрёпанная, точно какой-нибудь мак. - She did not wish to go out into the world all rumpled, like the field poppies.
Я родилась вместе с солнцем. - I was born at the same moment as the sun...
Кажется, пора завтракать. - I think it is time for breakfast.
[ Роза: Пусть приходят тигры, не боюсь я их когтей! - Rose: Let the tigers come with their claws!
Маленький принц: На моей планете тигры не водятся. И потом, тигры не едят траву. - The little prince: There are no tigers on my planet. Tigers do not eat weeds.
Роза: Я не трава. Тигры мне не страшны, но я ужасно боюсь сквозняков.- Rose: I am not a weed. I am not at all afraid of tigers but I have a horror of drafts.
Растение, а боится сквозняков. - A horror of drafts - that is bad luck, for a plant.]
Какой трудный характер у этого цветка… - This flower is a very complex creature...
Когда настанет вечер, накройте меня колпаком. - At night I want you to put me under a glass globe.
Где же ширма? - The screen?
Пустые слова он принимал близко к сердцу. - He had taken seriously words which were without importance.
Никогда не надо слушать, что говорят цветы. Надо просто смотреть на них и дышать их ароматом. - One never ought to listen to the flowers. One should simply look at them and breathe their fragrance.
Мой цветок напоил благоуханием всю планету, а я не умел ему радоваться. - Mine perfumed all my planet. But I did not know how to take pleasure in all her grace.
Надо было судить не по словам, а по делам. - I ought to have judged by deeds and not by words.
Цветы так непоследовательны. - Flowers are so inconsistent!
Я был слишком молод, я ещё не умел любить... - I was too young to know how to love her...

Когда вулканы аккуратно чистишь, они горят ровно и тихо, без всяких извержений. - If they are well cleaned out, volcanoes burn slowly and steadily, without any eruptions.
Извержение вулкана - это всё равно, что пожар в печной трубе. - Volcanic eruptions are like fires in a chimney.
Постарайся быть счастливым. И ни слова упрёка. - Try to be happy. He was surprised by this absence of reproaches.
Откуда эта тихая нежность? - He did not understand this quiet sweetness.
Оставь колпак, он мне больше не нужен. - Let the glass globe be. I don't want it any more.
Должна же я стерпеть двух-трёх гусениц, если хочу познакомиться с бабочками. - I must endure the presence of two or three caterpillars if I wish to become acquainted with the butterflies.
Больших зверей я не боюсь. У меня тоже есть когти. - As for the large animals - I am not at all afraid of any of them. I have my claws.
Решил уйти - так уходи. - You have decided to go away. Now go!
Это был очень гордый цветок. - She was such a proud flower.

Для королей все люди - подданные. - To kings, all men are subjects.
Король, ужасно гордый тем, что он может быть для кого-то королём. - King, who felt consumingly proud of being at last a king over somebody.
Великолепная горностаевая мантия покрывала всю планету. - The entire planet was crammed and obstructed by the king's magnificent ermine robe.
Этикет не разрешает зевать в присутствии монарха. - It is contrary to etiquette to yawn in the presence of a king.
Я запрещаю тебе зевать. Я повелеваю тебе зевать. - I forbid you to do so. I order you to yawn.
Для короля самое важное, чтобы ему подчинялись беспрекословно. - The king fundamentally insisted upon was that his authority should be respected.
Это был абсолютный монарх. Он был очень добр, поэтому отдавал только разумные приказания. - He was an absolute monarch. Because he was a very good man, he made his orders reasonable.
Если я повелю своему генералу обернуться морской чайкой, и если генерал не выполнит приказа, это будет не его вина, а моя. - If I ordered a general, if I ordered a general to change himself into a sea bird, and if the general did not obey me, that would not be the fault of the general. It would be my fault.
Повелеваю: сядь! - I order you to do so.
Планетка такая крохотная. Где же тут царствовать? - The planet was tiny. Over what could this king really rule?
Он был поистине полновластный монарх и не знал никаких пределов и ограничений. - For his rule was not only absolute: it was also universal.
И звёзды Вам повинуются? Пожалуйста, сделайте милость, повелите солнцу закатиться. - And the stars obey you? Do me that kindness... Order the sun to set...
С каждого надо спрашивать то, что он может дать. - One must require from each one the duty which each one can perform.
Власть, прежде всего, должна быть разумной. - Accepted authority rests first of all on reason.
Если ты повелишь своему народу броситься в море, он устроит революцию. - If you ordered your people to go and throw themselves into the sea, they would rise up in revolution.
Я имею право требовать послушания, потому что веления мои разумны. - I have the right to require obedience because my orders are reasonable.
Останься, я назначу тебя министром правосудия. - I will make you a Minister of Justice!
Здесь некого судить! - There is nobody here to judge!
Я ещё не осмотрел всего моего королевства. - I have not yet made a complete tour of my kingdom.
Если никого нет, тогда суди сам себя. - There was nobody at all... Then you shall judge yourself.
Себя судить куда труднее, чем других. - It is much more difficult to judge oneself than to judge others.
Если ты сумеешь правильно судить себя, значит, ты поистине мудр. - If you succeed in judging yourself rightly, then you are indeed a man of true wisdom.
Сам себя я могу судить где угодно. - I can judge myself anywhere.
Мне кажется, где-то на моей планете живёт старая крыса. Я слышу, как она скребётся по ночам. Время от времени приговаривай эту старую крысу к смертной казне. Но потом каждый раз надо будет её помиловать.- I have good reason to believe that somewhere on my planet there is an old rat. I hear him at night. From time to time you will condemn this old rat to death. But you will pardon him on each occasion; for he must be treated thriftily.
Надо беречь старую крысу: она ведь одна. - He is the only one we have.
Не люблю я выносить смертные приговоры. - I do not like to condemn anyone to death.
Повелите мне пуститься в путь, не мешкая ни минуты. - You should be able to order me to be gone by the end of one minute.
Назначаю тебя послом! - I make you my Ambassador.
Странный народ эти взрослые. - The grown-ups are very strange.

Тщеславные люди воображают, что все ими восхищаются. - For, to conceited men, all other men are admirers.
Забавная шляпа, что я ношу, для того, чтобы раскланиваться. - It is a queer hat I am wearing for salutes.
Здесь веселее, чем у старого короля. - This is more entertaining than the visit to the king.
Тщеславные люди глухи ко всему, кроме похвал. - Conceited people never hear anything but praise.
Доставь мне удовольствие всё равно восхищаться мною. - Do me this kindness. Admire me just the same.

[- Что ты делаешь? - What are you doing there?
- Пью. - I am drinking.]
[- Зачем? - Why are you drinking?
- Чтобы забыть. - So that I may forget.]
[- О чём забыть? - Forget what?
- Хочу забыть, что мне совестно. - Forget that I am ashamed.]
[- Отчего же тебе совестно? - Ashamed of what?
- Совестно пить! - Ashamed of drinking!]
Право же, взрослые очень, очень странный народ. - The grown-ups are certainly very, very odd.

XIII
Итого, стало пятьсот один миллион шестьсот двадцать две тысячи семьсот тридцать один. - Then that makes five-hundred-and-one million, six-hundred-twenty-two-thousand, seven-hundred-thirty-one.
У меня столько работы! Я - человек серьёзный. Мне не до болтовни. Два да пять - семь... - I have so much to do! I am concerned with matters of consequence. I don't amuse myself with balderdash. Two and five make seven...
Мне разгуливать некогда. Я - человек серьёзный. - I have no time for loafing. I am busy with matters of consequence!
Короли ничем не владеют. Они только царствуют. - Kings do not own, they reign over.
[- Для чего владеть звёздами? And what good does it do you to own the stars?
- Чтобы быть богатым. - It does me the good of making me rich.]
Он рассуждает почти как тот пьяница. - This man reasons a little like my poor tippler...
[Звёзды чьи? Ничьи. Значит мои? Потому что я первый до этого додумался. - To whom do the stars belong? To nobody. Then they belong to me, because I was the first person to think of it.]
Если ты найдёшь алмаз, у которого нет хозяина, - значит он твой. - When you find a diamond that belongs to nobody, it is yours.
Если ты найдёшь остров, у которого нет хозяина, - он твой. - When you discover an island that belongs to nobody, it is yours.
Если тебе первому придёт в голову какая-нибудь идея, ты берёшь на неё патент: она твоя. - When you get an idea before any one else, you take out a patent on it: it is yours.
[- Что же ты делаешь со звёздами? - And what do you do with them?
- Я распоряжаюсь ими, считаю и пересчитываю. - I administer them. I count them and recount them.]
[- Ты ведь не можешь забрать все звёзды! - You cannot pluck the stars from heaven...
- Нет. Но я могу положить их в банк. - No. But I can put them in the bank.]
Забавно. И даже поэтично. - It is entertaining. It is rather poetic.
Маленький принц: И моим вулканам, и моему цветку полезно, что я ими владею. А звёздам нет от тебя никакой пользы... - The Little prince: It is of some use to my volcanoes, and it is of some use to my flower, that I own them. But you are of no use to the stars...
Взрослые и правда поразительный народ. - The grown-ups are certainly altogether extraordinary.

XIV
Пятая планета была очень занятная. На ней только и помещалось что фонарь да фонарщик. - The fifth planet was very strange. There was just enough room on it for a street lamp and a lamplighter.
Может быть, этот человек и нелеп. Но он не так нелеп, как король, честолюбец, делец и пьяница. - It may well be that this man is absurd. But he is not so absurd as the king, the conceited man, the businessman, and the tippler.
В его работе всё-таки есть смысл: когда он зажигает свой фонарь - как будто рождается ещё одна звезда или цветок, а когда гасит фонарь – как будто звезда или цветок засыпают. - For at least his work has some meaning. When he lights his street lamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower. When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
Прекрасное занятие. - That is a beautiful occupation.
Это по-настоящему полезно, потому что красиво. - And since it is beautiful, it is truly useful.
Уговор есть уговор. - Orders are orders.
[- Тяжкое у меня ремесло. - I follow a terrible profession.
- В том-то и беда! - That is the tragedy!]
Моя планета год от года вращается всё быстрее, а уговор остаётся прежним. Каждую минуту я гашу фонарь и опять его зажигаю. - From year to year the planet has turned more rapidly and the orders have not been changed! Once every minute I have to light my lamp and put it out!
Значит, день длится всего одну минуту. Мы с тобой разговариваем уже целый месяц. - A day lasts only one minute, here where you live! While we have been talking together a month has gone by.
Можно быть верным слову и всё-таки быть ленивым. - For it is possible for a man to be faithful and lazy at the same time.
Просто нужно идти с такой скоростью, чтобы всё время оставаться на солнце. - To be always in the sunshine, you need only walk along rather slowly.
Когда тебе захочется отдохнуть, ты просто всё иди, иди, иди... И день будет тянуться столько времени, сколько ты пожелаешь. - When you want to rest, you will walk - and the day will last as long as you like.
[- Больше всего на свете я люблю спать. - The one thing I love in life is to sleep.
- Тогда плохо твоё дело. - Then you're unlucky.]
Вот человек, которого все стали бы презирать - и король, и честолюбец, и пьяница, и делец. - that man would be scorned by all the others: by the king, by the conceited man, by the tippler, by the businessman.
Он один не смешон потому, что думает не только о себе. - He is the only one of them all who does not ridiculous because he is thinking of something else besides himself.
Вот бы с кем подружиться. - That man is the only one of them all whom I could have made my friend.
Но его планетка уж очень крохотная. Там нет места для двоих... Но зато за двадцать четыре часа на ней можно любоваться закатом 1440 раз! - But his planet is indeed too small. There is no room on it for two people... But it was blest every day with 1440 sunsets!

Он уже столько странствовал. - He had already traveled so much and so far!
[- Ведь вы географ! - But you are a geographer!
- Вот именно. Я географ, а не путешественник. Мне ужасно не хватает путешественников. Ведь не географы ведут счёт городам, рекам горам, морям, океанам и пустыням. - Exactly. But I am not an explorer. I haven't a single explorer on my planet. It is not the geographer who goes out to count the towns, the rivers, the mountains, the seas, the oceans, and the deserts.]
Географ - слишком важное лицо, ему некогда разгуливать. - The geographer is much too important to go loafing about.
Он не выходит из своего кабинета. Но он принимает у себя путешественников и записывает их рассказы. - He does not leave his desk. But he receives the explorers in his study.
Если путешественник станет врать, в учебниках географии всё перепутается. - Because an explorer who told lies would bring disaster on the books of the geographer. So would an explorer who drank too much.
Если путешественник выпивает лишнее - тоже беда. Потому что у пьяниц двоится в глазах. - Because intoxicated men see double.
Цветы мы не отмечаем, потому что цветы эфемерны. - We do not record flowers because they are ephemeral.
Книги по географии - самые драгоценные книги на свете. - Они никогда не устаревают. - Geographies are the books which, of all books, are most concerned with matters of consequence. They never become old-fashioned.
Мы пишем о вещах вечных и неизменных. - We write of eternal things.
Посети планету Земля. У неё неплохая репутация... - The planet Earth has a good reputation.

XVI
Земля - планета непростая! - The Earth is not just an ordinary planet!
Если поглядеть со стороны, это было великолепное зрелище. - Seen from a slight distance, that would make a splendid spectacle.
Фонарщики, засветив свои огни, отправлялись спать. - Having set their lamps alight, the lamplighters would go off to sleep.
Фонарщики никогда не ошибались, никто не выходил на сцену не вовремя. - And never would they make a mistake in the order of their entry upon the stage.
XVII
Когда очень хочешь сострить, иной раз поневоле
приврёшь. - When one wishes to play the wit, he sometimes wanders a little from the truth.
Люди занимают на Земле не так уже много места. Всё человечество можно бы составить плечом к плечу на самом маленьком островке в Тихом океане. - Men occupy a very small place upon the Earth. All humanity could be piled up on a small Pacific islet.
Взрослые воображают, что занимают очень много места. Они кажутся сами себе величественными, как баобабы. - The grown-ups imagine that they fill a great deal of space. They fancy themselves as important as the baobabs.
[Маленький принц: На какую планету я попал? - The Little prince: What planet is this on which I have come down?
Змея: На Землю. В Африку. - The Snake: This is the Earth; this is Africa.]
Хотел бы я знать, зачем звёзды светятся. Наверное, затем, чтобы рано или поздно каждый мог снова отыскать свою. - I wonder whether the stars are set alight in heaven so that one day each one of us may find his own again...
Моя планета - прямо над нами. Но как до неё далеко! - My planet is right there above us. But how far away it is!
[Маленький принц: В пустыне всё-таки одиноко. - The Little prince: It is a little lonely in the desert...
Змея: среди людей тоже одиноко. - The Snake: It is also lonely among men.]
Я странное существо, не толще пальца, но могущество у меня больше, чем в пальце короля. - I am a funny animal, I am no thicker than a finger... But I am more powerful than the finger of a king.
[Маленький принц: Разве ты уж такая могущественная? У тебя даже лап нет... - The Little prince: You are not very powerful. You haven't even any feet...
Змея: Я могу унести тебя дальше, чем любой корабль. - The Snake: I can carry you farther than any ship could take you.]
Змея: Всех, кого я коснусь, я возвращаю земле, из которой они вышли. Но ты чист и явился со звезды... - The Snake: Whomever I touch, I send back to the earth from whence he came. But you are innocent and true, and you come from a star...
Змея: Ты так слаб на этой Земле, жёсткой, как гранит. - You are so weak on this Earth made of granite.
Я решаю все загадки. - I solve all riddles.

Где искать людей - неизвестно. Их носит ветром. У них корней - это очень неудобно. - The wind blows men away. They have no roots, and that makes their life very difficult.

Потухший вулкан служил ему табуретом. - He used the extinct volcano as a footstool.
Будем друзьями, я совсем один. - Be my friends. I am all alone.
Какая странная планета! Совсем сухая, вся в иглах и солёная. - What a queer planet! It is altogether dry, and altogether pointed, and altogether harsh and forbidding.
У людей не хватает воображения. Они только повторяют то, что им скажешь... - The people have no imagination. They repeat whatever one says to them...

Все дороги ведут к людям. - All roads lead to the abodes of men.
